A truly joyous Simchat Torah in Darlington

posted 12 Nov 2014, 02:49 by Peninnah Pappworth-McAllister
There was a pleasantly full synagogue for the Simchat Torah service with visitors from Northallerton, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Manchester swelling the numbers . Chatan Torah was DHC lay service leader, Ray Honeybourne and kallat bereishit was membership secretary /warden Peninnah McAllister. All Peninnah's children and grandchildren had travelled to attend on this special occasion and received an aliyah. Rabbi Dr Barbara Borts led the service and played the violin to accompany the singing which was hugely enthusiastic. Everybody  joined in the hakafot with some very lively dancing especially considering the small space available in our tiny synagogue. Ray and Peninnah had both chosen to learn part of their parashot and in her address, Rabbi Dr Borts commended them for their efforts. The last aliyah was for the children who were not the only ones to enjoy waving flags and throwing (and eating!) sweets. The usual lavish DHC communal Kiddush followed and the community and visitors stayed on to enjoy each others company for some time after the service.
