Darlington Social Club Concert

A marvellous and at times emotional, afternoon concert took place at Darlington Hebrew Congregation on Sunday 27th April under the auspices of the DHC social club organised by Estelle Solomon. Darlington born and with many links to the congregation including a past president, Mr N Hyams z”l, David Biermann, retired music lecturer and noted violinist gave his services free to the community. After a brief introductory talk about 4 types of Jewish Music, Mr Biermann played a varied programme that included examples of the differing types under a general heading of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ commencing with a rendition of ‘My Yiddishe Momma’ that had many in the capacity audience in tears.

The afternoon had commenced with a short service for Yom Ha-Shoah with the new Darlington Chair, Bess Robertson lighting the memorial candle. Dedicating it to the memory of his father’s uncles who perished in the camps, David played his own composition entitled ‘Remembrance’.

The audience were invited to sing along for several of the pieces including a selection from ‘Fiddler on The Roof’ that formed part of the second half of the concert and which followed a scrumptious interval cream tea baked by Estelle with some help from membership secretary, Peninnah McAllister.  The tremendously enthusiastic audience demanded of ‘Hava Nagila’ as an encore and several members danced a hora.  Mr Biermann has promised to play for the club in the future.
