Shavuot 5775

posted 5 Jun 2015, 02:21 by Peninnah Pappworth-McAllister

The shul was full last Sunday as the community together with some visitors, celebrated Shavuot for only the 2nd time in recent years and it was truly a, 'chag sameach', a joyous festival. The chuppah was up in front of the reading desk and the room filled with greenery and flowers. The children stood under the chuppah as representatives of the congregation and were 'married' to the Torah, later they joined in the Torah procession carrying baskets of fruit the funds for  which had been kindly donated by  a member. Afterwards there was kiddush and what can only be described as a Shavuot dairy- food feast. Whilst the children enjoyed activities in the hall led by Eleanor Pappworth, the adults continued to munch as we studied the ten commandments led jointly by Rabbi Dr Borts and Prof Robert Hayward.   The information they had to impart was fascinating and there were many interesting questions from the 'floor'.
 As one member wrote;"
- service was brilliantly organised . ---------Everything was in place and carried out with a glorious mixture of dignity and humour. ...........After the service the wonderful food and stimulating discussion about the Ten Commandments  were wonderful additions. "
Thank you to all who came, brought food and or flowers and joined in to celebrate the festival. The only problem was that we didn't have enough festival prayer books (machzorim) and had to share!
